Leading cannabis trade show and fair Spannabis has been forced to postpone its 2020 event in Barcelona.
Despite the event being less than 48 hours away, organizers were forced to pull the event due to emergency legislation brought in by local government designed to halt the spread of Coronavirus, aka Covid-19.
In an email to press pass holders, a Spannabis representative said: “As you may know, this morning, the President of the Generalitat of Catalunya, Quim Torra, the Councilor of Health, Alba Vergés, and the Councilor of Interior, Miquel Buch, announced extraordinary measures to respond to Covid-19 coronavirus disease.”
“Much to our regret, that gatherings of more than 1,000 people at indoor or outdoor events have been banned, in a bid to curb the spread of Covid-19 coronavirus in Catalonia.”
Spannabis is the world’s largest cannabis fair and was set to return for its 17th edition with an exhibition over 18,000m² at the Fira de Cornellà from March 13th to 15th. Visitors were expecting a three day event focusing on all things cannabis alongside lectures and performances. Billed as part trade show, part research conference, Spannabis attracts a wide audience from across Europe.
In the email, the organisers said: “At all times we have ensured caution and safety and, as we have previously announced, we will adhere to the statements of the competent authorities.”
“We have tried as hard as possible to hold Spannabis normally, but under these circumstances, we have no alternative.”
The event will return in Autumn 2020.
